High School Workshop

Organized by the Information and Education Committee

As part of ASHG’s genetics education outreach, every year’s Annual Meeting includes a full-day workshop for local high school students and their teachers. Participants interact with genetics researchers and learn about the field of human genetics. Students will enjoy inquiry-oriented genetics lessons, including a DNA extraction, and learn about the inheritance of taste and smell. Distinguished speakers will present on a variety of topics including cancer genetics, newborn screening, personalized genome analysis, and speciation in island habitats. This year’s High School Workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 20, from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm at the Hawaii Convention Center (Room to be announced). Attendance will be limited to 150 participants and registration is required. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Contact the ASHG Education Office at awong@ashg.org for further information.
